Deputy Secretary General

Honourable Delegates, Student Officers, and Guests,

Welcome to SAIMUN 2018! I am Diana Song from the International School Ho Chi Minh City, and it is my great honour to be serving you as the Deputy Secretary General. It has been four years since I attended my first conference, and Model United Nations thereafter is my fondest memory.

The theme of this year conference is “Unite to Progress”. The 21st century is often regarded as an era of globalization. The development of technology has been constructing more bridges among different nations. As a result, a leverage of one nation’s action becomes more significant than ever, and taking a compromising and tolerant posture has been crucial as well for every Member Nation. Currently, the world is facing a number of issues including population growth, climate change, terrorism, and a lack of resources. These issues cannot be solved without the international cooperation. It sounds conventional, but that does not mean it is untrue.

Before I conclude, there is one last point that I would like to say. Someone might argue that MUN is nothing more than a simulation of the United Nations, and it cannot change anything. Yes, we cannot deny that our resolutions do not have the actual legal force. However, I find the significance of MUN out in different viewpoint; we can make a change through the MUN, by pondering, debating and collaborating with others. This experience will lead you to a bigger world.

From the bottom of my heart, I hope this conference can inspire you and become your turning point. See you at the conference.

Sincerely,

Diana Song

Deputy Secretary-General, SAIMUN 2018
